The court in Nicosia postponed the hearing in the case of the monks of the Abbakoum Monastery
On September 11, 2025, in Nicosia, the hearing of the case involving two monks linked to the financial scandal surrounding the Monastery of Hosios Abbakoum was postponed. The hearing in the Criminal Court of Nicosia has been rescheduled for November 24, 2025, at 09:00 due to the court’s time constraints with other cases.
Two monks — Nektarios and Porphyrios — appeared before the court in connection with allegations regarding the handling of funds of the Monastery of Hosios Abbakoum and the Church of Saint Nicholas in Fterikoudi. At the previous session, both responded "not guilty" to the charges presented.
Nektarios faces 24 charges, including embezzlement and theft of various church funds, preparing false documents, submitting inaccurate tax declarations, and possibly obstructing a police investigation — the court stated that he allegedly asked a tenant not to provide a lease agreement. One charge involves the theft of €806,660 during his tenure as abbot.
Porphyrios faces seven charges from the total list. The next court session is scheduled for November 24 at 09:00; until then, the process is suspended.
