TRNC Supplies Free Electricity to the Republic of Cyprus
The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has supplied electricity to the Republic of Cyprus free of charge in recent days. The decision to waive the fees was made due to “good relations” and the relatively small amount of electricity transferred from the North to the South.
Ahmet Tugcu, head of the TRNC electricity workers’ union (EL-SEN), confirmed this in an interview with Bugün Kıbrıs.
According to Tugcu, the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) requested 20 megawatts of electricity from Kib-Tek between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM for four days this week. The request was fulfilled “as a goodwill gesture,” and due to the limited volume of electricity supplied, no payment was required.
This comes after reports that the TRNC began supplying electricity to the Republic of Cyprus following a breakdown at the Dhekelia power station, which left the southern part of the island struggling to meet its electricity demand.
Both sides in Cyprus can exchange electricity through two connection points—one in Atalassa, a suburb of Nicosia, and another in Orunda, near Morphou. Normally, both communities pay for any electricity purchased from the other. However, on this occasion, the power was supplied free of charge.
