Off the coast of Cyprus, a French frigate and a US military ship are stationed
There are currently two foreign military ships in the territorial waters of Cyprus. These are a French frigate and the USS BATAAN, an assault ship belonging to the US Navy.
According to the Alphanews publication, the French frigate of the UN mission arrived in the country last Friday with a fleet of 270 people and will leave Cyprus' waters on Wednesday.
The American ship arrived with a crew of 3,300 people and dropped anchor yesterday morning, and is expected to leave the island on Thursday. The vessel can respond to dangerous missions or unforeseen circumstances, as well as humanitarian crises, reassure allies, and promote the free flow of maritime trade. Its length is 257 meters, and it can also accommodate helicopters on board. The 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit is conducting planned docking, replenishment of supplies, and rest. As noted by the American ambassador, this underscores the strong ties between Cyprus and the United States.
Officers and crew members of the US military ship "Bataan," including Marines from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, were greeted by US Ambassador to Cyprus Julie Fisher.
"The presence of the ship in the Eastern Mediterranean emphasizes the joint commitment of Cyprus and the United States to promoting security and stability at sea," the diplomat said.
