In 2023, Cyprus airports set a record for passenger traffic
The managing company of two international airports in Cyprus, Hermes Airports, announced that by the end of 2023, the total passenger traffic exceeded 11.6 million people. This is a record figure for the country.
Compared to the pre-pandemic year 2019, passenger traffic growth is 3%. Thus, the figures recorded in 2023 are the most outstanding result ever recorded by Cyprus airports.
"Despite adversities and ongoing challenges, we managed to surpass the 2019 record and create a new milestone that will be set as a benchmark," reported Maria Kurupi, Senior Aviation and Communications Development Manager at Hermes Airports.
On average, throughout the year, Cyprus airports serve 32,000 passengers per day. In the summer, this number increases to 41,000, and in winter, it consistently stays at around 18,000.
Larnaca Airport welcomed 8.1 million passengers. The growth compared to 2022 was 34%, with an average load factor of 81%.
Paphos Airport registered 3.6 million passengers, demonstrating a 12% growth compared to the previous year and maintaining an average load factor of 89%.
In total, both airports serve 52 airlines flying to 39 countries on 159 routes. The highest percentage growth in passenger traffic was recorded on the Cyprus-Armenia and Cyprus-Georgia routes.
To expand transportation connectivity, 18 new routes were opened last year, including Basel, Toulouse, Bordeaux, and Naples.
Moreover, throughout 2023, airlines increased the frequency of existing flight schedules by an average of one flight per week, supporting efforts to develop existing markets.
During this winter season, Larnaca and Paphos airports will host 30 airlines operating flights to 35 countries and 102 destinations.
