Since the beginning of 2024, 2,998 children have been born to the Greek Cypriot community in the Republic of Cyprus. Among them are 1,565 boys and 1,433 girls.

According to information provided to the Parliamentary Demographic Committee by the Ministry of Interior, 1,331 children of foreign citizens and 133 children belonging to the Turkish Cypriot community (63 boys and 70 girls) were also born this year.

In total, from 2020 to 2024, 32,811 children were born to Greek Cypriots, 12,427 to foreigners, and 1,825 to the Turkish Cypriot community who hold Cypriot citizenship.

These figures were presented during discussions about the low birth rates in Cyprus. The meeting also explored ways to reduce this phenomenon while simultaneously increasing birth rates.

The President of the Committee, Linos Papayannis, urged the government to take measures to combat declining birth rates and to strengthen Greek Cypriot families.

According to Papayannis, the birth rate was 2.4 in 1990 but has decreased to 1.4 today. He also noted that data shows 30% of births occur outside Greek Cypriot families.
