At Paphos Airport, a 36-year-old man wanted by Poland for murder and kidnapping has been detained — he faces extradition
According to police, the 36-year-old man was detained at Paphos Airport during passport control upon arrival in Cyprus — the incident occurred when a flight arrived from another European country around 14:30 yesterday. The man is wanted by Polish authorities under a European arrest warrant to serve a one-year prison sentence, issued in October 2020 in a case of kidnapping and unlawful detention.
The detainee has been taken into custody to begin the judicial procedure for his extradition to the Polish law enforcement authorities. According to the police, the arrest was carried out under the European arrest warrant, after which a formal extradition procedure will begin involving the prosecutor's office and the court.
What this means for residents and visitors of Cyprus: during passport control, police officers check EU wanted databases, and persons subject to European arrest warrants may be detained on the spot. For questions about legal status or possible extradition, one should contact their consulate or legal representative.
