Fire at paper production facility in Ypsonas (Limassol): former employee arrested on suspicion of arson
Early this morning, a major fire broke out at a paper processing and storage facility in the Ypsonas area of Limassol; according to local newspapers, the blaze began at around 02:30. The fire spread rapidly after explosions of small gas cylinders stored on the premises, with fragments flying into the windows of nearby houses.
According to reports, two houses were damaged as a result of the incident, and several residential buildings were evacuated as a precaution. Firefighters noted difficulties in extinguishing the blaze due to uncertainty about the types of materials stored inside. Although the factory is registered and licensed as a paper processing and storage facility, authorities discovered not only cylinders but also other explosive items on site.
Police, after questioning the owner, arrested a 43-year-old man who had worked at the factory until two months ago and had reportedly threatened its owner; he has been charged with suspected arson and will soon appear in court. The investigation is ongoing, according to officials.
Practical significance for Northern Cyprus residents: in case of gas smell, explosions, or visible fire, immediately leave the danger zone and follow rescue services’ instructions; warehouse and business owners should provide firefighters with precise information about the materials stored on their premises.
