In each province of Cyprus, 800 divorces are registered annually
Every year, 800 divorces are registered in each province of Cyprus. Nearly 400 divorce applications have been registered since the beginning of the year.
This was reported by the parliamentary committee on human rights, which convened on Monday to begin discussing financial issues.
During the meeting, the president of the parliamentary committee on human rights and AKEL member of parliament, Irini Haralambidou, asked the Democratic Rally Party (DISY) to propose an amendment so that committee members could discuss it and send it to a plenary session.
A representative of the Cyprus Bar Association (PDA) informed members of the Human Rights Committee that the process of alimony collection in the country is difficult.
He also proposed changing the cumbersome guardianship process, noting that 2/3 of such decisions are made when one of the parents refuses to pay alimony. The alimony collection process takes a long time: from 1.5 months to 7 years.
At the same time, 80% of legal aid is rejected by family courts, despite the existence of a fund that is not exhausted.
In a statement after the committee meeting, independent member of parliament Alexandra Attalides stated that the number of divorces is increasing too much, so the country needs a national strategy on this issue, including measures to prevent divorces.
