In Larnaca, the municipality has announced that systematic mosquito spraying is ongoing in the area. This is necessary to reduce the population of annoying insects and protect public health.
According to the municipality's statement, alongside spraying, sanitary service teams from the Ministry of Health continue to visit houses to combat Aedes aegypti mosquitoes and inform the public about the measures taken against them.
The municipality emphasized that even the smallest amount of stagnant water stored in any objects or premises can breed mosquitoes. Recent inspections revealed potential breeding grounds for blood-sucking mosquitoes in the backyard areas of many residents. This includes malfunctioning pools and old cesspits that were not properly sealed after connecting buildings to the sewer system.
Additionally, sources of mosquitoes can be old car tires, water storage barrels, old reservoirs, clogged grates for rainwater on ramps and basements where water accumulates, as well as saucers for flower pots and containers with aquatic plants.
Mosquitoes can also hatch in old car tires on tire repair and workshop platforms.
It is noted that the mosquito species present in Cyprus are capable of transmitting infectious diseases to humans, such as yellow fever virus, dengue fever, Zika virus, and West Nile virus.
For this reason, the municipality stated that it has no choice but to take action against those who do not follow the instructions of competent authorities and continue to support mosquito breeding grounds.
