Larnaca Imposes Fines for Excessive Water Use
The Larnaca Self-Government Organization (EOA) has announced new measures to crack down on the wasteful use of water, introducing fines as part of an effort to conserve this increasingly scarce resource.
“This week, the agency will begin issuing fines for using hoses to wash pavements, streets, terraces, railings, and vehicles,” stated the Larnaca Water Supply and Sanitation Department.
The crackdown is being enforced under special water-saving legislation introduced in response to a prolonged drought.
“With a tough summer ahead and water reserves running low, the authorities are stepping up efforts to save every drop,” the department added.
Inspections will be carried out across the city to ensure compliance. Violations will result in official warnings or out-of-court fines.
Under the law, such violations are considered criminal offenses and could result in penalties of up to three months in prison, a fine of up to €513, or both.
However, offenders can settle the issue out of court by paying a €51 fine directly at the EOA office.
Authorities are urging residents to use water responsibly to avoid stricter restrictions or possible supply disruptions in the coming months.
