A 28-year-old Azerbaijani national and a 27-year-old Estonian woman have been detained in Cyprus on suspicion of involvement in terrorist activities and espionage.

According to police, the arrest took place in Larnaca before their scheduled flight from the island. The operation was the result of intelligence analysis received in late February.

Investigators believe the man visited Iran several times and may have been recruited by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Prior to the arrest, police monitored the couple and recorded actions that, according to investigators, resemble the methods of trained agents.

During their stay in Cyprus, the suspects were in Paphos, Limassol, and Larnaca, where they photographed various sites. According to the investigation, many of these locations are frequented by Israeli citizens. Police are checking whether these photographs could have been sent abroad.

Although the couple presented themselves as tourists, they arrived on the island on different flights, and the woman is suspected of providing cover for her partner's activities.

The court issued an eight-day remand order for the suspects, and their personal belongings have been seized for forensic examination.

The investigation is ongoing.
