Work is set to begin in Cyprus on laying a new medium-voltage power cable in the Paphos forest. The cable will extend from the village of Lysos, pass through the Stavros tis Psokas forest station, and end near the Chorteri peak. This upgrade will enable the station to stop relying on the generator it has depended on for over a year.

To install the 14.3-kilometer-long cable, trenches will be dug along a scenic nature trail, with the work divided into sections to minimize environmental disruption and inconvenience.

The Stavros tis Psokas forest station and parts of its surrounding network were cut off from the grid following a wildfire in July last year. Since then, the station has operated entirely on generators.

The new underground cable is also expected to significantly reduce the risk of future wildfires in the Paphos forest.

“This project marks the first step in an ambitious and long-term plan to drastically reduce or eliminate fire risks in our forests caused by EAC cables,” stated Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou.

The work, planned in collaboration with the Forestry Department and the police, is expected to be completed by the end of February 2025, in time for the bird nesting season, which begins in March.

During the construction period, drivers are urged to follow temporary road signs to ensure safety and avoid delays.
