USS Mitscher docked in Limassol
On August 25, 2025, the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Mitscher arrived at the Cypriot port of Limassol. The U.S. Embassy in Nicosia thanked the residents of the city for their warm welcome, noting that the ship is named after Admiral Marc Mitscher, a U.S. Navy officer from World War II.
According to the embassy’s statement, the USS Mitscher departed from the Norfolk Naval Base, Virginia, on July 25, 2025, heading to the waters of Europe and Africa with the mission of demonstrating resolve, strengthening U.S. security, and protecting economic prosperity.
During the port call, the crew will be granted well-deserved shore leave: the sailors will spend several days in Limassol, where they can rest and get acquainted with the local culture and the island.
The USS Mitscher, named after Admiral Marc Mitscher, whom diplomats described as a pioneer of naval aviation, played a key role in U.S. naval air operations during World War II.
