Women to Be Admitted into the Cyprus National Guard
Cyprus is working on a new policy to allow young women to voluntarily enlist in the National Guard after finishing high school. This announcement was made by President Nikos Christodoulides.
President Christodoulides shared this news during an event on Sunday evening celebrating the 60th anniversary of the National Guard, held at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre.
According to the President, the decision is expected to be approved by the Council of Ministers in the coming days.
- "I hope that starting from 2025, young women will have the opportunity to voluntarily join the National Guard, just like young men, right after they finish high school or technical school," President Christodoulides stated.
The President mentioned that women will be able to serve voluntarily for a minimum of six months and up to 14 months, which is the mandatory service period for young men.
On Monday, Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas expressed his support for this move, emphasizing the valuable contribution that young women can make. He noted that women are often more mature than men at the time of enlistment.
The issue is expected to be brought before the Council of Ministers for discussion in the coming days.
