Blackout Risk: Cyprus Faces Power Cuts This Summer
Electricity cuts are expected across Cyprus this summer, according to a warning issued by local authorities.
Hara Koushiappa, spokesperson for the state electricity transmission operator, explained:
“There will be times when power supply simply won’t meet demand. Any unexpected situation could lead to outages. Based on forecasts, demand is expected to reach around 1300 MW under moderate conditions, 1340 MW under normal conditions, and could spike to 1390 MW in extreme cases — which would break last year’s record.”
The greatest risk of outages will be during peak evening hours, especially between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., with July expected to be the most critical period.
Authorities have even drawn comparisons to the summer of 2011, when damage to a major power plant forced the country to rely heavily on mobile generators to meet demand.
