Concerns in Nicosia Over Potential Water Disruptions Due to Planned Supply Cuts
Nicosia may face a water shortage if the authorities decide to reduce volumes supplied from state systems. The capital’s Water Supply Authority (EOA) stated that the proposed 10% reduction could lead to serious consequences for residents.
EOA notes that the capital is fully dependent on centralized water supply and has no alternative sources. Unlike other regions, Nicosia does not have its own reservoirs or wells that could compensate for reduced supply.
According to authority representatives, even a relatively small reduction in volumes could lead to scheduled water distribution — with certain areas being cut off every other day. This, in turn, would place additional strain on infrastructure and increase the risk of accidents and leaks when pressure in the network is restored.
The Water Development Department emphasizes that these are preventive measures, not an emergency situation. The department expects that voluntary reductions in water consumption by the population will help avoid strict restrictions.
However, EOA is skeptical of such expectations, recalling that similar water-saving campaigns in previous years did not yield tangible results. The situation is now exacerbated by climate change, rising temperatures, and increased consumption due to active construction.
The authority stresses that without a clear plan and an even distribution of restrictions, residents of Nicosia risk being the first to face water supply disruptions.
