Fire breaks out after road accident near Xanthi: three dead, two injured

This afternoon, on the Egnatia highway between Kostandina and Xanthi, near the Iasmos toll station, a serious road accident occurred. A truck collided with two passenger cars, sparking a fire. As a result of the tragedy, three people were killed and two others sustained serious injuries.
In one of the cars, there were four people: three perished in the flames, while another with severe injuries was taken to hospital. The truck driver was also hospitalized with injuries. In the other car, carrying four more passengers, according to initial information, no one was hurt.
The fire spread to farmland adjacent to the highway. Shocked eyewitnesses, as well as emergency services — firefighters, three EKAB ambulances, and police — rushed to the scene.
As a result of the accident, the Egnatia–Iasmos–Xanthi section of the highway was closed to traffic in the direction from Kostandina to Xanthi. Vehicles were diverted via the national road route: Kostandina – Porto Lagos – Xanthi. Drivers are urged to follow the instructions of police officers directing traffic.
