No Dedicated Bus Lanes in the Center of Limassol
The Limassol Municipality has vetoed the creation of bus lanes along the city's main street, believing that this measure could worsen traffic conditions.
This decision contradicts Limassol's Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP), a cornerstone of European urban mobility policy.
The European Commission strongly encourages cities and towns across Europe, regardless of size, to adopt the SUMP concept. Such plans can significantly enhance residents' quality of life by addressing critical issues like traffic congestion, air pollution, noise, climate change, road safety, and parking.
However, representatives from the Limassol Municipality expressed concerns that the proposed bus lanes on Nikos and Despina Pattichis Boulevards would disrupt local businesses, while the construction of safety islands could hinder access for emergency vehicles.
Mayor Yiannis Armeftis noted that approximately 34,000 vehicles pass through the boulevard each day.
As an alternative, it has been suggested that buses and cars with more than two passengers be allowed to use the dedicated lanes.
