Famagusta Authorities Demand Removal of Migrant Housing from Tourist Area
The Municipality of Paralimni-Deryneia has urged the authorities to immediately remove seven migrant housing structures from the tourist zone and to increase law enforcement in recreational areas.
The issue was raised during a meeting with local police, the social welfare department, and the International Organization for Migration.
“We strongly condemn the unacceptable actions of the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare and the International Organization for Migration regarding the use of seven migrant housing units in the municipality's tourist area,” the statement said.
Authorities believe that having these structures in a predominantly tourist area is creating a range of problems, including a rise in criminal activities.
In particular, last year’s tourist season saw a notable increase in thefts and break-ins in the area. According to official police reports, these crimes were committed by individuals residing in the migrant housing units.
“Ensuring the quality of life for residents and, most importantly, the safety of visitors must be a top priority,” the municipality’s statement emphasized.
As a result, the municipality has called for the immediate removal of the housing units and a significant boost in law enforcement presence, along with swift implementation of measures to protect both residents and businesses.
