High microbiological contamination in the sea near Ag. Varvara beach
According to the initial results of water sample analyses near Ag. Varvara beach, located in the marine zone of Ag. Tychonas, high microbiological contamination has been detected. This was announced by the Director of the Department of Environment, Theodoulos Mesimeris, who expressed confidence that the issue could be resolved within the next 24 hours.
He explained that the Republic operates a monitoring system for all beaches — in total, water samples are regularly taken from 130 control points. If analyses reveal levels exceeding the norms, the legally established procedure is immediately triggered: a public warning is issued with a recommendation to refrain from swimming.
According to the head of the department, on Saturday, August 9, 2025, additional samples were taken. It is expected that within two days — once the laboratory tests are completed — new data will be released.
Regarding the potential impact on swimmers, he stressed: “This does not mean that problems will necessarily occur when swimming, but it is better to refrain.” He also noted that water has a natural self-cleaning ability, and, in his forecast, the situation will stabilize within 24 hours thanks to natural processes.
