Over the past six years, 32 individuals in Cyprus have undergone gender reassignment surgeries. The youngest applicant was 19 years old, while the oldest was 53.

Currently, 19 women and 13 men have applied to the Ministry of Interior to update their gender information and make corresponding changes to the personal details on their identity documents.

Michalis Beis, a senior administrative officer at the Ministry of Interior, explained on the Alpha Information program that the process for updating personal information is straightforward. Applicants are required to submit a request to the relevant district administration.

  • "There is no standard application form. Citizens simply write a letter indicating their intention to change their information. They also provide a written statement specifying the updated details they wish to use and pay a fee of €80. Once the request is approved, we notify them to visit the district administration or KEP offices to obtain a new identity card, passport, or certificate by paying the applicable fees," Beis said.

All government computer systems linked to the Civil Registry are updated immediately to reflect the changes, while the citizen’s identification number remains the same.

Although medical certificates are not a mandatory requirement, they are encouraged to support the application.

This process applies solely to Cypriot citizens. Foreign nationals must first complete all necessary procedures in their home countries and then inform Cypriot authorities of any changes to their details.
