Parents will pay for vandalism of school buses in Cyprus
The authorities of the Republic of Cyprus are discussing tougher measures to prevent incidents of vandalism on school buses. Parents will pay for vehicles damaged by pupils.
This decision was taken in two consecutive meetings held at the Ministries of Education and Transport.
A programme of action to address this serious safety issue has been worked out with the competent ministers, the police and organised parents of secondary schools.
According to philenews, a provision of the school charter has been reaffirmed in which the school has the right to fine a pupil in case of inappropriate behaviour on the bus that takes him to and from school.
In addition, however, other, stricter measures are provided. In particular, it is assumed that the damage caused to the buses by students will be paid by their parents. A student who repeatedly commits such acts or endangers the driver or other student passengers by his/her actions will have his/her bus pass confiscated and will be denied entry to the bus.
In the event that an extreme incident occurs during transport that endangers others in the vehicle, the driver will be able to stop the bus at a safe location and call the police.
It is worth noting that a request has also been made to the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection to give the go-ahead for the activation of cameras inside the buses, so that in case of incidents, the authorities can have access to materials to identify the offenders.
Recall, earlier it was reported that the transport company Cyprus Public Transport (Cyprus Public Transport) may stop transporting students in Nicosia and Larnaca. The company will demand the suspension of some school routes due to vandalism of buses.
