In the Republic of Cyprus, the reservoir filling level in February 2026 has dropped to 13.7% of total capacity. For comparison, in February 2025, the figure stood at 26%.

According to the Combined Drought Indicator, the country is among the regions experiencing severe problems due to lack of precipitation.

Eliana Tofa Christidou, head of the Water Development Department, stated that water inflow into dams is at its lowest level since hydrological observations began in 1901.

Critical Situation in Reservoirs:

A particularly difficult situation is observed at the island's largest reservoir, Kouris Reservoir, where the water level has dropped to 12.2% of capacity. The Church of St. Nicholas, usually submerged, has become visible again due to the falling water level.

Authorities Urge Consumption Cuts

Amid record drought, the government has urged residents to reduce water consumption by 10% — equivalent to approximately two minutes of continuous water use.

An emergency measures package worth €31 million has also been announced. it includes:

  • wastewater reuse;
  • leak reduction;
  • irrigation restrictions;
  • promotion of water-saving plumbing;
  • installation of desalination plants.

By the end of 2026, 14 new seawater desalination plants are expected to be operational. However, environmental organizations warn of potential negative impacts on marine flora and fauna.

According to the Mediterranean Growth Collective, temperatures in Cyprus are rising 20% faster than the global average. Since 1901, rainfall has decreased by 15%, while water demand has surged by 300% due to tourism and population growth.

Average daily water consumption per person in Cyprus reaches 500 liters, while the European average is about 120 liters. Authorities intend to reduce this figure to 140 liters per person per day.
