Residents of Cyprus are celebrating two holidays as today is an official public holiday in the country
In Cyprus, today is an official public holiday, marking two celebrations simultaneously.
Unions are observing International Workers' Solidarity Day, May 1st. In honor of the holiday, the two largest unions in Cyprus - Sek and Peo - will hold a series of events across the island. In particular, a joint march with the unions of Cypriot-Turks will take place in Nicosia.
Additionally, there will be a meeting at the Sek office today, where the Secretary-General of the union, Andreas Matsas, will speak.
It is expected that the Minister of Labor, Yannis Panayiotou, will also speak at the event.
It should be noted that May 1st is an official public holiday in Cyprus. Only bakeries and kiosks are open. Most major supermarkets are closed today. Retail outlets authorized to operate on holidays will be required to pay their employees double the regular wage.
Furthermore, May 1st marks Cyprus's accession to the European Union. This event took place in 2004.
Recall that it was previously reported that on May 1st, a joint event of union organizations from the two communities of the island will take place in the buffer zone in Cyprus.
