Anthesteria in Cyprus

The Cypriot Flower Festival, or Anthesteria, is not just a holiday but a true tribute to the island’s extraordinary nature. Cyprus is home to about 2,000 species of plants, approximately 150 of which are real rarities, found nowhere else in the world.

Every year, a commission of biologists gathers to share the results of new research on Cyprus' flora. They consider everything: where rare plants grow, how to plan future crops of fruits, herbs, and flowers — the work is bustling.

Among the vibrant representatives of local nature are wild orchids, daisies, tulips, gladioluses, lilies, irises, and peonies. In gardens, bush roses and oleanders bloom, while in the mountains, near monasteries and churches, you can find violets, anemones, and daisies — the floral symbols of Cyprus.

On this day, flowers are literally everywhere: they are admired, given as gifts, woven into decorations, and used in festive rituals. Parades and fairs take place in the cities, while in the villages, the streets transform into blooming corridors.

The name of the festival comes from the Greek word "anthos," meaning "flower." Anthesteria has roots in Ancient Greece — back then, the festival was dedicated to the god Dionysus and was held once every four years.

Geography of Anthesteria Celebration

Anthesteria is celebrated across the island, but especially vividly in Paphos, Limassol, and Larnaca. The resort town of Protaras also joins in. The cities transform during these days: even the most familiar streets are filled with scents and colors. Everywhere — fairs, concerts, carnivals.

In Paphos, everything takes place on Poseidonos Avenue. In Limassol — on one of the main streets of the tourist district, Germasogeia, and in Larnaca — on the Finikoudes promenade, along Athinon Avenue, and in the city center. A special atmosphere exists in the picturesque village of Lania at the foot of Troodos: on this day, locals open the gates of their blooming courtyards to all who wish to visit.

Anthesteria in Paphos

The parade in Paphos takes place on Poseidonos Avenue — a tourist area with dozens of hotels, so transport may not be necessary. However, if you decide to take the bus, choose routes No. 606, 611, 612, or 631.

Anthesteria in Larnaca

Here, the main events take place on the Finikoudes promenade — a popular place for walks. You can get there by bus No. 425. Stops: "Grigori Afxentiou" or "Archiepiskopou Makariou III (Stasi 1)". Keep in mind: before the parade, traffic may be closed, and routes might be changed.

Anthesteria in Limassol

In Limassol, the festival unfolds in the tourist part of the city — on Vasileos Georgiou I street in the Germasogeia area. Nearby are hotels, a beach park, and the "Pizza Hut" bus stop. Bus routes No. 12, 25, 30, 30a, and 95a stop there.

Carnivals in Honor of Anthesteria

The carnival is an integral part of Anthesteria. It is celebrated in Paphos, Limassol, and Larnaca. In Paphos, the main event occurs: flower floats pass along Poseidonos Avenue towards the old harbor. Girls along the road hold bouquets and wreaths, and the air is filled with aromas, music, and festive excitement.

The main highlight of the parade is the large banners and floral arrangements created by local communities and companies. Everyone decorates with flowers — some with wreaths, some with bouquets in hand, others pin flowers on their clothes. After the parade, the celebration continues: concerts, contests, shows.

Although it may not be as grand as in the Netherlands, the atmosphere is unforgettable. Smiles, flowers, the scent of spring — all this is Anthesteria. Tourists who are lucky enough to attend the festival are usually in complete awe.
