Traditional Cypriot Village of Deryneia

Located in the Ammochostos (Famagusta) region, the small town of Deryneia - originally known as Yerinia - boasts a rich ancient history and is thought to have been the landing site for settlers arriving on the island after the Trojan War.

As one of the fertile "red soil villages" (Kokkinochoria), Deryneia is the main producer of strawberries on the island and is renowned for its juicy, sweet fruits. Visitors to the biennial Strawberry Festival can enjoy fresh strawberries and strawberry-based products such as juice, jam, liqueur, and ice cream.

The village attractions include the Folk Art Museum, the Open-Air Museum of Traditional Occupations, and the Cultural Centre of Occupied Famagusta. The village is also home to several significant churches, including the 15th-century church of Agia Marina, the Byzantine church of Panagia (with preserved 17th-century icons), and the small medieval church of Agios Georgios.

Every year on December 16th (the Feast of Saint Modestus), an important religious festival is held in honor of Agios Modestos. Visitors can take part in traditional celebrations, which include market stalls, entertainment, local food, and drinks.

And, of course, the Christmas market begins immediately afterward.
