Traditional Christmas Market in the Village of Fikardou
Every year in the second half of December, the traditional Christmas market opens in the village of Fikardou — one of the most atmospheric events in the Troodos mountains.
Traditional Cypriot village Fikardou
The village of Fikardou is located at 900 meters above sea level on the southeastern slope of Troodos, in the Pitsilia region. Location.
This secluded and idyllic village, almost uninhabited today, was declared an ancient monument in 1978 by the Department of Antiquities, and in 1987 received the prestigious Europa Nostra award for outstanding conservation. Fikardou is considered one of the best-preserved villages of traditional Cypriot architecture.
The village is completely pedestrian — no cars are allowed, preserving its authenticity. 18th-century houses with unique wooden finishes and traditional stone architecture have been carefully restored.
Two historical houses — Katsinioros House and Achilleas Dimitris House — now belong to the Department of Antiquities and function as museums, showcasing household items and rural life of past centuries.
The church, dedicated to the Apostles Peter and Paul, dates back to the 16th century. It is well preserved and is an important religious and architectural monument.
It is believed that the village’s name comes from the expression "den of fugitives" ("figa andron"), related to the history of two powerful clans controlling the area from 400 to 800 AD.
