Traditional Cypriot Village of Fikardou
The village of Fikardou is located at an altitude of 900 meters above sea level on the southeastern slope of the Troodos Mountains, in the Pitsilia region.
This secluded and idyllic village, now almost uninhabited, was declared an ancient monument in 1978 by the Department of Antiquities and received the Europa Nostra Award in 1987. The village has been carefully restored to preserve 18th-century houses with their remarkable wooden craftsmanship and folk architecture. Cars are prohibited from entering. Two of the houses — the Katsinioros House and the Achilleas Dimitris House — now belong to the Department of Antiquities and have been converted into museums showcasing rural artifacts and rural life in past centuries.
The village church, dedicated to Apostles Peter and Paul, dates back to the 16th century AD.
The village’s name is believed to originate from the Greek term “refuge of fugitives” (“figa andron”), referring to fugitives recruited by two dominant clans that controlled the region between 400 and 800 AD.
