Traditional Cypriot Village of Laiki Geitonia
Laiki Geitonia is a traditional district within the city walls. It was established to preserve the traditional character of old Nicosia (pre-1900) and to utilize the area by creating spaces for promoting folk art and culture, as well as providing outlets for local products.
This traditional district is located on Aristokyprou and Praxandrou Streets and was later expanded to include adjoining streets.
It houses cultural centers, leisure spots (taverns, cafes, restaurants), shops, and workshops. The tiled square is partially used by a cafe-restaurant and is surrounded by shops.
The tiled courtyards of shops and other buildings serve as spaces to showcase workshop creations and simultaneously create a pathway through the entire zone. Tiled walkways, interconnected by arcades, facilitate pedestrian access and form interesting open spaces. The buildings in this area are typical examples of traditional urban architectural heritage.
The grand opening of Laiki Geitonia took place on December 21, 1983, under the mayor of Nicosia, Lellos Demetriades, and was inaugurated by the former President of the Republic of Cyprus, Spyros Kyprianou. It has been awarded the "Golden Apple" prize by the International Federation of Journalists and Editors in Tourism (FIJET).
