Serhat Akpınar, Secretary-General of the Democratic Party in the TRNC, called for the introduction of a teacher protection and screening system modeled on the United Kingdom amid public outrage over allegations involving educational institutions.

In a written statement, the politician said recent events had deeply shaken society and caused concern among families, calling into question the level of safety for children in schools. According to him, the state must take stricter measures to monitor the education sector.

Akpınar proposed that the Ministry of National Education introduce a special “Teacher Protection and Screening System,” which would include enhanced vetting of teachers working in primary and secondary schools. The aim, he said, is to prevent individuals who may pose a risk of child abuse, harassment, psychological pressure or manipulation from being allowed to work.

The politician stressed that teachers should undergo a comprehensive assessment not only of their professional qualifications, but also of their psychological suitability, ethical responsibility and ability to work with children. In his view, particular attention should be paid to teachers brought in from abroad.

“Society cannot remain silent when it comes to children’s safety. This is a matter of conscience, humanity and responsibility to future generations,” Akpınar said.

He added that such a system has long been used in the United Kingdom and has proven effective in ensuring a safe educational environment. In the Democratic Party leader’s view, Northern Cyprus also needs modern mechanisms for monitoring and protecting students.

The statement came amid ongoing discussions about measures to strengthen safety in schools and increase parents’ trust in the education system.
