DAÜ-SEN says government funding is insufficient: the university lacks funds for basic needs
The Academic Staff Union of the Eastern Mediterranean University (DAÜ-SEN) issued a statement in front of the parliament building, stating that the state’s contribution to the university’s budget remains insufficient and in practice only covers scholarships for foreign students.
According to DAÜ-SEN Chairman Ercan Hoşkare, the funding increase предусмотренное протоколом, подписанным с правительством в апреле 2024 года, has not been implemented. At the same time, despite the rise in the cost of living, the university has managed to cut expenses, but has not been able to achieve a similar improvement on the revenue side.
Hoşkare noted that scholarships for foreign students were increased by 47%, and agencies are paid 1,000 dollars for each student they attract. In his opinion, this distorts the goals of the university and creates additional financial pressure.
The union also criticized the Ministry of Education, stating that attempts at dialogue remain unanswered, and that university staff have already accepted a 28% salary cut and “cannot do more.”
DAÜ-SEN emphasizes that the mission of the university is education and scientific activity, not the financing of ultra-cheap education for foreign students. The union demands fulfillment of funding obligations and a revision of the approach to university management.
