The General Police Department introduces voluntary traffic inspectors from September 15
The General Police Department of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) completed the application process for the “Gönüllü Trafik Denetçiliği” program on August 29; selected candidates will undergo training and start work on September 15. Voluntary traffic inspectors will record and report traffic violations they encounter in daily life to the police.
According to the General Police Department, participants will not issue fines themselves; their role is to inform law enforcement of recorded violations. Residents surveyed by local media mostly consider the initiative useful and expect a reduction in violations and accidents, especially those related to speeding and lane changes. Supporters of the program (including Ataberk Tardu, Zafer Uzunlar, Cem Dana, and others) emphasize its deterrent effect on “unreliable” drivers and the benefits of police-community cooperation.
At the same time, some respondents expressed concerns: Ahmet Koçak and Osman Mesarya fear an increase in conflicts on the roads and believe that primary enforcement duties should remain with the police. For residents, this means possible increased monitoring of everyday traffic and the need to comply with rules: those wishing to participate in the program should contact the police for training, and all drivers should be prepared for more active reporting of violations by citizens.
