UN Special Representative to Meet Cyprus Leaders Today
Colin Stewart, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Cyprus and head of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), will hold separate meetings today with the leaders of the island's two communities. These discussions are taking place as part of ongoing efforts to open additional crossing points and revive the stalled Cyprus reunification negotiations.
Stewart's first meeting will be with Nikos Christodoulides, the Greek Cypriot leader, at 3:00 PM. He will then travel north to meet with Ersin Tatar, the Turkish Cypriot leader.
Earlier this week, Stewart met with the lead negotiators from both sides, Menelaos Menelaou and Günay Onar.
Meanwhile, the UN Security Council is expected to convene today to approve the extension of the UN peacekeeping force's mandate in Cyprus for another year.
It's also worth noting that on January 20, Ersin Tatar, leader of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), and Nikos Christodoulides, leader of the Greek Cypriot administration, met at the residence of the UN Special Representative, Colin Stewart, located in the buffer zone.
The two leaders discussed opening new crossing points and strengthening trust between their respective communities.
