Nicosia Mayor Reveals City's Population
Mehmet Harmancı, the mayor of the Turkish Municipality of Nicosia (LTB), has disclosed the population figures for the city, estimating it to be between 160,000 and 200,000 people.
Harmancı shared this information during a broadcast of the program "Private Area," aired on Genç TV and hosted by Mustafa Alkan.
According to the mayor, the permanent population of Nicosia, including dormitories, stands at around 160,000 people. However, he noted that this number can exceed 200,000 on a daily basis.
The mayor based his estimation on water consumption in the city, stating, "We need to look at water meters. In Nicosia, we have 35,000 residential tariffs and nearly 8,000 tariffs for workplaces. If you calculate 35,000 and multiply by four, it comes to approximately 160,000 people including dormitories."
"In other words, we have about 160,000 permanent residents in Nicosia. When calculating the daily population, it becomes evident that it exceeds 200,000," the mayor emphasized.
Harmancı also highlighted that "Dr. Fazıl Küçük Boulevard sees the daily passage of 33,000 vehicles."
"The projected population, as reported by authorities, is 81,400 people. We are discussing approximately twice that number," the mayor underscored.
Earlier, the Minister of Interior of the TRNC, Dursun Oğuz, had cited the Statistical Institute's figure of 407,000 people for the country's population.
"The provided figure is not realistic at all," the mayor concluded.
