President of Northern Cyprus Meets with Turkish President and Vice President

The President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Ersin Tatar, met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz in Ankara. Both meetings took place yesterday at the Presidential Complex.

Closed-Door Talks with Erdoğan

The meeting with President Erdoğan was held behind closed doors, and no specific details have been released about what was discussed. It took place just before the 5+1 informal summit on the Cyprus issue in Geneva, highlighting its importance. Prior to the closed-door talks, Tatar and Yılmaz held a joint press conference.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

During the press conference, Vice President Yılmaz emphasized that the mutual visits reflect the strong cooperation between Turkey and the TRNC. He explained that their meeting focused on a shared agenda, including the current state of the Cyprus issue and future political and economic developments.

Yılmaz also reaffirmed Turkey’s dedication to ensuring the prosperity and economic stability of the Turkish Cypriot people. He reminded the public that in January, Turkey and the TRNC government jointly presented the Fourth Five-Year Development Plan for the TRNC.

"We are in the final stages of finalizing the 2025 Economic and Financial Cooperation Agreement, which is based on the Development Plan. Once signed, this will mark the beginning of a new phase of collaboration. We will continue working together to ensure the development and strengthening of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus," Yılmaz stated.

Upcoming Key Summit in Geneva

Tatar's visit comes just ahead of the 5+1 informal summit on the Cyprus issue, which will take place next week in Geneva. Earlier this week, the United Nations (UN) released the forum’s agenda. The summit will include representatives from both Cypriot communities, as well as the three guarantor powers—Greece, Turkey, and the United Kingdom—along with UN officials.

The Geneva meeting is seen as a pivotal moment in Cyprus negotiations, as it will be the first high-level discussions on the issue in over four and a half years.
