Kamu-İş Announces Strike Against $120 Million Fiber Optic Protocol
The Cyprus Public Servants Trade Union (Kamu-İş) has announced a strike to protest the Fiber Optic Infrastructure Development Protocol worth $120 million.
In a written statement, the union expressed serious concern that the implementation of the protocol could undermine the public nature of the telecommunications infrastructure and lead to decisions contrary to public interests.
According to Kamu-İş, the document promoted by the UBP-DP-YDP government contains provisions that could negatively impact the future of the communication system and the level of state control. The statement emphasizes that telecommunications infrastructure of strategic importance should be managed transparently and under public control, and that state institutions should not be "handed over to private hands."
The union reported that a strike will be held on Monday, February 23, in all branches of the Telecommunications Department.
