Cyprus issue to be discussed at UN meeting in New York
The UN Security Council will discuss the Cyprus issue in detail at the second informal extended meeting in New York.
It is reported that the meeting “will provide a clear picture of the stage at which the efforts undertaken by the UN currently stand, even if they do not yield results.”
Colin Stewart, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Cyprus and Head of the peacekeeping mission, will give a final briefing on the situation on the island and then step down.
It is noted that these two events are not directly related. The report states that the personal envoy of the Secretary-General in Cyprus, who met the day before with the Greek Foreign Minister Georgios Gerapetritis, provided information on several matters agreed upon during the informal extended meeting in Geneva in March, on which progress had been made, as well as on issues where the expected progress had not been achieved.
According to the report, Gerapetritis confirmed Greece’s commitment “to the framework of an agreed solution and the need to discuss the essence of the Cyprus issue at a new informal extended meeting, which will take place in New York.”
