UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy, to Return to Cyprus

Maria Angela Holguín Cuéllar, the personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General to Cyprus, will return to the island to continue negotiations aimed at finding common ground between the two sides. The UN has confirmed the envoy's upcoming visit.

Deputy UN spokesperson Farhan Haq announced this during a press briefing at the UN headquarters in New York. Haq added that more detailed information would be provided once the travel dates are finalized.

“As soon as we have dates that we can share, we will inform all parties accordingly,” the UN representative stated.

It was previously reported that the tenure of the Colombian diplomat as the UN envoy to Cyprus has been extended for three months. Maria Angela Holguín Cuéllar will continue her efforts to resume negotiations on the Cyprus issue.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres appointed Maria Angela Holguín Cuéllar from Colombia as his personal envoy to Cyprus in early January. Initially, her mandate was for six months, during which time the diplomat was tasked with finding common ground to restart negotiations between the two communities on the Cyprus issue.

Over the past six months, the diplomat has visited the island several times and met with leaders of both communities, and representatives of non-governmental organizations, businesses, and civil society. According to the leader of the TRNC, there are currently no points of convergence between the parties that could allow for the resumption of negotiations.
