Union strike in Northern Cyprus continues: schools closed, hospitals to suspend operations
Public sector unions are continuing their strike and protest actions in Northern Cyprus today, April 7, 2026. During yesterday's event, Türk-Sen Chairman Arslan Bıçaklı spoke about the public's loss of trust in the government and the intention to continue actions until the controversial law is withdrawn.
According to Bıçaklı, the unions will conduct actions "in parliament" until the law is revoked; he announced that union members would gather at the protest site at 09:00. Bıçaklı also warned of possible further "surprises" if the government does not change its stance.
As noted in the statement, it has already been announced that tomorrow operations at state hospitals will be suspended, except for extreme emergency cases. Furthermore, a general strike has been declared for today: schools will be closed, and exams will not take place. These measures imply significant disruptions in education and healthcare.
Residents are advised to consider potential restrictions on access to public services and to follow official announcements from unions and authorities for up-to-date information on institutional operations and the schedule of educational activities.
