TRNC Ministry of Health launches investigation into hospitalization of Teknecik Power Plant employees
The Ministry of Health of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) announced on September 3, 2025, the start of an investigation into the circumstances of the hospitalization of four employees of the Teknecik Power Plant. The investigation was prompted by a written complaint from the General Directorate of Kıbrıs Türk Elektrik Kurumu, which questioned the validity of the medical reports for these patients.
The ministry reported that Dr. Beyhan Berova, chief physician of Dr. Akçicek Hospital in Girne, has been assigned to conduct the review; on Friday a joint medical consultation with all treating doctors will take place. Preliminary data indicate that blood tests revealed no abnormalities, and clinical records did not show signs of toxic inhalation; patients mostly complained of coughing. However, one report included a diagnosis of inhalation and ingestion of substances with reference to toxic effects, which raised doubts.
The ministry emphasized the existence of informational confusion and promised to publicly report the results of the investigation. Residents and energy sector workers are advised to follow official ministry announcements and seek medical care if symptoms appear; employers are advised to ensure compliance with industrial safety measures.
