Black Flag Appears on a Beach in Iskele as Protest Against Water Quality Reports
A black flag has been raised on a beach in Iskele as a form of protest by local environmentalists against recent sea water quality reports, which claim that all beaches in the country are clean.
This initiative was spearheaded by Hasan Sarpten, the former president of the TRNC Biologists Association. Through this symbolic act, Sarpten aims to draw public attention to environmental issues at organized swimming areas and to pressure authorities into action.
"We put up our black flag on Iskele beach to challenge the officials who misled the public by claiming that all beaches are 'clean,' even though sewage is flowing into the sea," Sarpten wrote on his social media page.
It's worth mentioning that in mid-August, the latest water quality test results for the beaches of Northern Cyprus were released. Samples were taken from organized swimming areas in four regions: Dipkarpaz, Bafra, Famagusta, and Iskele.
In the past, water test results conducted in state laboratories have frequently faced criticism from both the public and environmentalists for not accurately reflecting the true state of the water.
