AI-powered surveillance cameras deployed in Northern Cyprus without legal framework

In Northern Cyprus, activists and human rights defenders are raising concerns over the use of artificial intelligence-supported surveillance cameras being implemented without necessary legal procedures. This was reported by the Platform for Freedom of Expression.
According to them, the Ministry of Interior and the police have installed cameras capable of analyzing images using AI, without prior discussion or approval of relevant regulations. This raises concerns about invasion of privacy and lack of transparency.
The Platform warns that implementing such technologies without clear legal frameworks may lead to abuses and violations of citizens' rights. It also emphasizes that the use of AI in surveillance requires strict rules and data protection safeguards.
Human rights advocates are calling on the authorities to immediately halt the use of these cameras until appropriate legal mechanisms are in place. They also demand public debate and parliamentary oversight over the implementation of such systems.
So far, the Ministry of Interior has not issued an official response to the activists’ statements.
