New Safety Regulations for Construction Sites Enacted in Northern Cyprus
A new regulation specifying minimum standards for occupational health and safety on construction sites has come into effect in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). This directive has been officially published in the "Official Gazette."
The updated "Occupational Health and Safety Regulations for Construction Work," prepared by the Council of Ministers, set minimum health and safety requirements to be met on construction sites to ensure worker safety.
This regulation also outlines the responsibilities of individuals and legal entities involved in the construction process. It mandates that the primary contractor takes essential measures to safeguard health and safety during construction activities.
Comprising 18 articles that govern safety practices in the construction industry, the regulation will be enforced by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security.
Under the regulation, before starting any construction project, the main contractor must prepare an occupational health and safety plan for the site. Additionally, certified safety experts and occupational health coordinators will oversee on-site procedures, providing necessary warnings, assessments, and instructions.
In line with the new requirements, the employer must ensure that all machinery, tools, equipment, materials, and work methods at construction sites comply with the Occupational Safety and Health Law, Labor Law, and standards set by the Turkish Standards Institute concerning health and safety.
