On January 20, Northern Cyprus Interior Minister Dursun Oğuz stated on Gündem Kıbrıs Web TV that eight bills are being prepared to enhance police powers, with priority given to four of them.

Oğuz explained that the increase in crimes involving hired perpetrators and the import of criminal tools requires expanding the legal and technical capabilities of the police. According to him, police officers requested broader authority for technical monitoring of organized criminal groups, but these requests were previously ignored.

The minister noted that preventive measures are being carried out in coordination with Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, Turkey, the Turkish Ministry of Interior, and the General Directorate of Police. An X-ray device has already been installed at the Girne pier, with thermal cameras planned for future installation.

It was also announced that international cooperation will continue, including collaboration with Interpol and information exchange with Turkey regarding extradition and crime prevention.

On migration issues, Oğuz reported the establishment of a Migration Center and the transfer of six vehicles from Turkey for district services: surveys, fingerprinting, and database creation are being conducted; individuals without documents are subject to deportation.

The minister added that funds from the sale of real estate to foreigners have been used to create a social mortgage support fund and that 300 agricultural plots have been allocated in the village of Sınaryüstü; infrastructure development and planned asphalting for 2026 continue.
