A serious traffic accident occurred on a mountain road in Northern Cyprus, resulting in the death of the driver. Preliminary data indicate that the cause of death was injuries caused by the deployment of a Takata airbag, which is known worldwide for its manufacturing defect, according to Yeni Düzen.

The incident took place while the vehicle was traveling along a mountainous section of the road. According to one version, the driver lost control due to difficult terrain and crashed into an obstacle. At the moment of impact, the airbag deployed, and its excessive pressure caused fatal internal injuries.

Police and ambulance teams arrived at the scene, but the driver could not be saved — doctors pronounced him dead at the scene. According to the police, the man was alone in the car.

Authorities have launched an investigation, which includes a technical inspection of the vehicle and its safety components. Special attention is being given to the mounting system and condition of the Takata airbag, which may have been worn out, expired, or improperly installed.

The global Takata airbag scandal

Takata airbags were at the center of one of the largest scandals in automotive history. A defect in the gas generator system caused the device to explode upon activation, scattering metal fragments inside the cabin. According to international reports, thousands of people were injured and dozens killed due to the defect.

Since 2013, automakers around the world have launched massive recalls of vehicles equipped with Takata airbags. As of 2025, more than 100 million vehicles have been affected across the U.S., Japan, the EU, and other regions.

Following numerous lawsuits and multi-billion-dollar fines, Takata declared bankruptcy, but its products are still found in older vehicles that were never recalled.

In Cyprus, authorities have previously conducted inspections and withdrawn vehicles with Takata airbags. In September this year, several unsafe cars were officially blocked from use for the first time.

Police in Northern Cyprus urge drivers to check their cars by VIN number to ensure they do not have defective Takata airbags installed and to immediately contact authorized service centers if necessary.
