In Northern Cyprus, the operation of vehicles with dangerous TAKATA airbags will be banned

Minister of Public Works and Transport Erhan Arıklı stated that owners of vehicles with risky TAKATA airbags are required to replace them by June 30, 2027. Otherwise, the operation of such vehicles will be prohibited.
According to the minister, the problem is global in nature and has already led to injuries and deaths. In Northern Cyprus, the risk is higher due to the large number of Japanese cars and the hot climate. The risk group includes vehicles manufactured between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2019, including brands such as Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda, Mitsubishi, BMW, and Volkswagen.
Owners must:
- by March 31, 2026, check the vehicle by VIN on manufacturers’ websites;
- if a dealer is available — contact the official representative;
- if there is no dealer — contact the Department of Road Traffic;
- after replacement, submit confirmation to the vehicle inspection authority by June 30, 2027.
