In Southern Cyprus, 3,322 domestic violence complaints were registered in 2024
According to the newspaper Fileleftheros, citing the response of Minister of Justice Marios Harziotis to a request from MP Alexandros Attalidu, 3,322 complaints related to domestic violence were recorded in Southern Cyprus in 2024. Out of these, procedural cases were prepared for 1,300 incidents, and 703 cases were referred to judicial authorities.
It is also noted that as a result of investigations, 711 arrest warrants were issued and 671 restraining orders for removal or limitation of contact were processed. These data were provided by the minister in an official response to the parliamentary representative cited by the publication.
For residents of Northern Cyprus, the statistics are important as an indicator of the scale of the problem on the island and the effectiveness of law enforcement in the neighboring jurisdiction. According to the report, a significant portion of complaints does not proceed to judicial proceedings, reflecting the difference between the number of reports and the number of criminal cases. Residents are advised to follow official announcements and initiatives for the protection of victims in the relevant jurisdiction.
