The authorities of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) have selected a country from which imported frozen meat will be supplied to Northern Cyprus. Three European countries submitted bids, and the choice was made in favor of one of them.

According to Prime Minister Unal Ustel, speaking to Diyalog Media in an interview after allowing the import of boneless frozen lamb meat and frozen packaged minced meat, offers were received for supplies from Spain, Romania, and the Netherlands.

After evaluating all the proposals, the authorities decided to choose the Netherlands. Dutch boneless frozen lamb meat, up to one-year-old, will be available in butcher shops for 400 Turkish liras per kilogram. Frozen packaged beef mince with a fat content of 10% will be sold at a price of 300 Turkish liras per kilogram. The first deliveries will be made within 10 days.

Unal Ustel also emphasized that they will not deviate from this decision and highlighted that the incentive amount for lamb meat for domestic producers has been increased from 800 to 1100 Turkish liras.

Earlier this week, the Council of Ministers of the TRNC approved the import of frozen meat. The decision came into effect after publication in the "Official Gazette."

As per the decision of the Council of Ministers, the import of frozen boneless lamb and minced meat into the country is permitted. Imported meat products are exempt from all taxes and duties.

Previously, maximum prices were set for local lamb meat in the TRNC. The cost of meat should not exceed 550 Turkish liras per kilogram. This decision sparked strong dissatisfaction among butchers, leading to a temporary shortage of meat on store shelves.
