Week of violations: thousands of fines and dozens of detentions on Northern Cyprus roads
TRNC police have summarized the road situation for the week of April 20 to 26: mass violations of the rules were identified during inspections and investigations of road accidents.
A total of 13,561 drivers were checked, with legal action taken against 2,298 individuals. In addition, 219 vehicles were impounded, and 9 drivers were arrested.
The most common violation was speeding, for which 759 drivers were punished. A significant number of cases were also related to the lack of necessary documents: 196 people drove without a proper license, 82 without a vehicle inspection, and 71 without insurance or with insufficient coverage.
Police also recorded 47 cases of driving under the influence of alcohol. 81 drivers were fined for not wearing a seat belt, and another 149 for using a mobile phone while driving.
Other violations included dangerous and reckless driving, ignoring traffic signs and traffic lights, and installing window tinting that restricts visibility. A total of 670 cases were classified as other offenses.
Police note that these figures indicate ongoing problems with discipline on the roads. Intensive checks will continue, and enforcement of the rules will be tightened to reduce accident rates and improve traffic safety.
