UN prepares new initiative on Cyprus: meetings held in New York
UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy on Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin, held two meetings with Antonio Guterres in New York last week. Media outlets reported this, citing diplomatic sources.
According to the publications, the talks took place on Wednesday and Saturday and were dedicated to preparing a new initiative for the settlement of the Cyprus issue, which could be launched as early as July.
It is noted that the discussions are taking place against the backdrop of renewed diplomatic activity surrounding Cyprus. Earlier, Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman stated that preliminary steps for launching a new negotiation process are being considered during the contacts in New York.
Additional momentum was given to the discussions by a statement from the Turkish side. During Guterres's recent visit to Turkey, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan expressed Ankara's readiness to support a new initiative on Cyprus.
The UN is expected to intensify its mediation efforts in the coming months to resume dialogue between the parties. Experts note that current contacts could serve as the foundation for a new phase of negotiations after a long period of stalemate.
