Progress in Water Supply Project for the TRNC: 220 Million Cubic Meters of Water Received
Since June 27, 2016, approximately 220 million cubic meters of water have been delivered to reservoirs within the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) as part of the water supply project.
According to the Office of Development and Economic Cooperation (KEİ), investments by Ankara in drinking, technical, and agricultural irrigation water within the TRNC will continue under agreements on economic and financial cooperation signed between the TRNC and Turkey.
KEİ reminded that within the project of irrigation infrastructure on the plains of Güzelyurt and Mesaoria, which started in 2018, an agricultural irrigation tunnel with a length of 5,700 meters was constructed and opened on May 22, 2021. Irrigation activities began in this area after the completion of the tunnel.
Moreover, construction of irrigation facilities on the Orta-Mesaoria plain is ongoing, along with the planning of a connecting line with a length of 207 km.
It is also noted that as of the end of 2023, projects for the restoration and cleaning of ponds, the renewal of irrigation systems, technical maintenance, repair, renovation, and material procurement from Nicosia have been implemented under the Economic and Financial Cooperation Agreement between the two countries. A total of 42 million Turkish liras have been allocated for these purposes.
Thanks to the implementation of these projects, water purification facilities have been created for state-owned farms for the production of barley seeds, such as "Reşatbey" and "Beşparmak."
The project also contributes to the cleaning of ponds and streams across the country. In this context, the rehabilitation of the Yarköy stream, the Karşıyaka pond, and the Eşiltepe pond were carried out in 2023.
As part of the project "Drinking Water and Pipelines, Technical Maintenance, Repair, Reconstruction, and Material Procurement," funding was provided for the water supply of the New Central Prison and nearby settlements. The work was carried out with the resources of the Turkish Republic.
